Yeah, it is a great card in EDH -obviously “each upkeep” triggers!

It got 4th and 9th at the last Standard GP! What more do you want from Seance?

I actually am putting Seance to good work. It’s in a Trostani EDH deck… but man is that card value city. I can’t wait for it to breakout in T2.

I think this means you should popularize the Seance deck in your own meta. 🙂

I literally linked to a standard tournament in New Zealand where someone got top 8 with Seance. Any time Seance top 8s, I mention it in my article. It\’s a real thing.

I haven’t been a fan of casting Seance for value, but I got my first taste of a good Seance deck the other day on MTGO. It was a RWUb deck with Faithless Looting, Forbidden Alchemy, Seance, Zealous Conscripts, Angel of Serenity, FoF Sphinx, Izzet Charm and other such good cards. I was really impressed with the deck, though I found the inclusion of Laboratory Maniac to be suspect. At any rate, I hadn’t really considered previously how good Seance can be with a dedicated shell consisting mostly of cards that are good on their own. I still think that it would be super bad in my Junk deck though.

Actually, I have not seen too many Zombies either. The meta in Asia seems to be full of Frites, and GW agro. I think it’s important to remember that when speculating, location and meta is important. I recently went deep into Necropolis Regent and bought about 300 copies for 5yuan ea. (about 75cents). I figure I’ve cleared out 10% of Beijing’s copies, so hopefully it will hit big.

I will keep my eyes out on Seance, and if I start to see it get played, I will buy in a little.

Keep your eyes out on Conjurer’s Closet, I think it has the right stuff. I already bought in.

You don\’t see Seance happening? It\’s not a matter of opinion. It IS happening. Consistently. People are getting top 8s with Seance decks all over MTGO and in GPs and there were a ton of Seance decks at US/ Canadian States/Provincials. If you don\’t see it, you\’re not looking.

Closet is a good spec if you think other people will play it. We didn\’t arbitrarily pick Seance, we knew it was a good deck and that it would put up results. If you think closet will catch on with lots of people, the card is bulk right now so it\’s a very low risk investment that is all upside.

That being said, Your call on Naya is 100%. I came 1st in a gameday in Beijing with a Naya-Agro-Bonfire shell. When Gruul and Boros comes out, Naya will be a “thing”, but it already is anyways. The boat has sailed on Huntmaster of the Fells, Bonfire, and Thragtusk. I know that Seanace is a card your speculating heavily on, and respectfully, I just can’t see it happening. I think Conjurer’s Closet is a better pick. With no ramp, it’s turn 4 Huntmaster, turn 5 Closet (getting you a flicker at the end of that turn) and turn 6 Thragtusk, or Armada Wurm… Thoughts???

The funniest thing? I looked up Redirect to make sure THAT card worked the way I thought it did.

You can redirect Rakdos\’ return to any number of players. It\’s admittedly weak in one on one play.

Sorry to inform you, but Sphinx’s Revelation says:

You gain X life and draw X cards.

So it actually works on neither Rakdos’s Return nor Sphinx’s Revelation.

Would work on Bonfire if people were still playing it in heavy quantities.

When your opponent casts Revelation for four … …When an opponent casts Rakdos’s Return for four….

Redirect is a good answer to both, and two blue…

.

— Jason

Heads up Jason, Redirect only works on Sphinx’s Revelation as it says “target player.” Rakdos’s Return however says “target opponent.” You can not change the target to the player who cast the spell as that is not an “opponent”. Assuming a dual and not multiplayer, you have no other legal target but yourself. Maybe you were thinking about Bonfire as the second spell?

Cheers!

-Bret

PS: Love the articles. The way you write has a “conversational” tone to it. It makes the read easy but doesn’t skimp on the information. Keep up the good work.
