Tomorrow marks the first set of RPTQs, and with that qualified players will be receiving the first ever RPTQ promo in Liliana of the Veil.
With Liliana being safe from a Modern Masters reprint and being widely played in Modern, the price of Innistrad copies is quite high right now. Pack foils are currently going for ~$200. So that begs the question, what will the RPTQ foils be valued at?
One ambitious eBay seller is looking for $300. With the art matching the pack foil exactly, it's difficult to imagine that the price will be that much higher.
I've heard it speculated that the promo Lilian's price will probably settle close to that of the non-foil pack price, but there is a question of how long it will take to settle there. The starting price will likely be high (though probably sub-$300), then will drop continually as the rest of the RPTQs happen this year, and then, by my guess, they'll slowly appreciate in value from there.
What do you expect the retail of the promo Liliana to be?
I’m taking this as my opportunity to sell my non-foils, I think. I just don’t know that there’s much upside left in them. You?
I think my question is why do you think that the promo liliiana is actually going to be worth more than the pack foil. OG Liliana has the old border and the innistrad set symbol. Typically people looking to pimp have the oldest most expensive version, which isn’t the promo. Even if there are less of this than pack foils out there, pack foil is still more pimp.
I don’t believe this, and I don’t think I wrote anything that suggests this… I think it’ll probably be in the middle.
You make good points here, but I must point out that the Ebay auction linked in this article has sold at a price of $300. Somebody out there was willing to be a 50% markup, I imagine there might be more who will allow themselves to be wrapped up in the hype. If we are lucky enough to get a hold of one of these early enough, we may be able to capitalize on said hype.
I mean, I’m planning on trying to ship mine as soon as possible for as much as people will pay.
I just want to note that the theory for “pimps go for the oldest foil version” is not necessarily true! (to be honest, we should get rid of that false theory).
Pimps go for the rarest, and in case of regular reprints, the older version is probably being printed in lower print runs, so more rare.
In this case, the promo could be more rare (however I have absolutely no clue how rare they are).
Anyway, pimps are all different, some go for the art, the border, or just for foils. some pimps go for the cheapest foils (like the KTK fetches).
I think the main conclusion should be: Modern will get a bump in popularity because of being an established format, cards relative easy to find, and modern masters.
We all know liliana will get more reprints. Why wait for that? If you’re not playing liliana, there is no reason to hold that card any longer.
I just keep thinking, this is the RPTQ promo fir the entire year. When asked I give numbers lkke $120-150. I put the ceiling on set non-foil at $100 or JTMS, and honestly in this particular situation see the set foil getting capped near it’s current price for at least the next year.
I think for me, this promo will mean more to me than a normal set foil because I earned it. Think of these as a way to show everyone your ptq pins too. This is the same type of thing. I could definitely see the promo being worth more than the set foil because of these reasons.
I just learned that the TOs for the RPTQs are required to return all additional promos. I’m thinking it may settle a bit higher than I initially thought. Probably closer to $150-160.
Thay being said, I’ve heard of prople locally selling at $110-100.
I just know I wont let mine go for anything less than $250. It has meaning to me having earned it playing and hell..its a foil liliana.
