The Magic Origins release date is here! As such, people have been playing more with the cards and have a better feel for what they want to play in Standard. Over the course of this week, people decided that they like Thopter Spy Network.
Spy Networks could be preordered for a little under a buck, and now retail for $3+. It's not to the point where you really would have made money preordering, but this is a price to be aware of as packs are being cracked.
The $3 looks more appropriate to me than $1, as if there is an artifact deck this and Pia and Kiran Nalaar are the two cards that would allow the deck to play long games and come back from Languish.
I feel like this isn’t real life. haha!
Check the price on Languish and talk to me about “not real life”.
Yeah, though I mean I was fully expecting to bulk Spy Network. I just had the inclination it wasen’t a .49c card and better than Alhammarret.
Languish being $11 makes sense. It’s “Darnation” lol.
Lol. Pretty much.
I picked up 15 playsets of thopter spy network at $1.49 per playset preorder so I’m happy to flip them. I also picked up 10 playsets of each pain land for $3.49 or less a playset (except battleforge, some one picked up all 18 playsets at 3.99. I was waiting for 3.49 on those, oh well) I got in on languish at $15.99 but only picked up 5 playsets. I hate to say it but I didn’t really like many of the preorder prices. Most of my buys will go in the closet and not see the light of day for 2 years. I just picked up Russian and Korean booster boxes and 10 playsets on Alhammarrets Archive. I think I’m going to just focus more on rotating cards that will see modern play. Thanks for the articles.
It’s increasingly difficult to make money on pre-orders. Over the last year, I could list a couple hits that you could have banked on for Standard, but the real money has been in the Modern market and in other long term holds.
Modern money is more reliable but often more of an investment. There are opportunities in standard but they’re often riskier.
I like turtles.
The real success of this weekend has been Jeff Hoogland’s UW control deck at the SCG open, which made an impressive top 8 finish, showing us that blue control decks can be viable in the new standard. Even more interesting than the thopter spy network (which Hoogland plays as a 2-of) is Hangarback Walker, which he plays as a 4-of: the cheapest copies on TCG player are currently $6, up from $1.50 at the start of the weekend.
I’m sure a lot of people looked at Hangarback Walker during spoiler season and saw a bulk rare. Whether it will be a staple of the new standard format remains to be seen, but Jeff Hoogland seems to be very bullish on the card, and it’s a value engine that can go into any color deck.
