Hi Jordan. Thanks for all the tips. Just top 4’d the PTQ at the side event in GP HK. Lost to burn in the semis, didnt draw bomb fast enough while under ensnaring bridge.
I lost my win and in for day 2 against top deck Lyra from UW but I’ve been enjoying the deck. I just changed 1 gemstone sb to 1 spatial. Hope to be able to mulligan even better in the future.

I always keep Powder but for two exceptions:
– When I anticipate opponents bringing in 2+ copies of Stony Silence and require both Relic and Bomb (comes up vs Abzan and Esper decks)
– Against Jund pilots very experienced with the matchup (comes up against friends who have cracked the MU by testing with me extensively)

Don’t know how to beat HS yet, but Spirits guide is on the horizon. Hollow One too, but as you may have noticed, that MU is not particularly difficult. Thanks for the feedback.

I will be using this deck for GPHK this weekend and I am also interested about sb guide against hardened scales and the spirits deck. Also I have been siding out serum powder against the hollow one decks and I have been winning but was wondering if that is correct.

Cheers for continuing to improving the deck. It has been a blast to play.

Yep! I actually haven’t played enough vs HSA to know how to beat it yet, but Tron is on the way. In short:

-Prioritize hands with fast mana and Mimic. Ideally you want to deploy threats and then have enough mana to be Quartering them.
– A fast Chalice on 1 can also brick their hands, and TKS can take their only relevant haymaker.
– Manlands are functional reach in this MU for closing out the game through wipes and walkers.
– Wurmcoil is the single hardest resolved creature for us to deal with in Modern.

I feel the matchup is medium overall.

Is there any chance you’ll be doing a guide for Mono G Tron or Hardened Scales Affinity at any point? Of all the matchups, those are the two that I feel are bad preboard and don’t really improve much postboard. Hardened Scales in particular has been a headache for me, as the various X costs make chalice less effective (unlike regular affinity) and the instant speed value engines almost nullify the heavy removal plan after sideboarding.

Any tips would be appreciated 🙂

Cavern does not solve any of the deck’s problems against control. Beating these decks revolves around proper threat sequencing and mulligans. See article for more info—the whole thing is about adapting playstyle against control. It also mentions that in a control-infested meta I would play a 2nd Spyglass over Bomb #4.

We’re seeing and have seen somewhat of a control renaissance in modern. In some regions it’s been the most played deck for some modern events (although I’m lumping UW/Jeskai together). In those situations I wonder if *not* including cavern results in some potential percentage points lost against those decks.

Sure, it’s possible to cobble together wins without the card. I’m just saying if we’re in a control meta, surely the deck can capitalise on this current state of affairs and boost its overall metagame win% by a tangible amount. You can’t deny that the card would improve those matchups further. One copy maybe? Two?

Would like to know your thoughts on how the deck adapts to a control dominated meta
