This past weekend RUG Delver took a big step back into the limelight in Worcester. By coincidence, Ryan was busy taking down another Legacy event with the same archetype, though a significantly different list. To Probe or not to Probe, that seems to be the question.
Between Modern Masters, SCG Legacy and Standard tournaments, Jason Alt covers all the news from this week.
This week, you will read many set reviews and I suggest that you give each one some scrutiny. I’m reviewing mainly with an eye toward Eternal magic, which is my strength. Typically, there isn’t much in a new set for Eternal formats, so I’ll amuse you and me both with commentary on other cards.
We’ve got a lot to go over this week! First, I want to talk to you about quirks of the collector market in Legacy and Vintage. I’ll also touch on a pop-up card and some out-there picks in anticipation of Return to Ravnica.
It’s another week of examples today, selected to help hone some of your predictive senses on speculation. I’m going to share some cards today and I’ll be honest – sometimes, I still don’t know why these things act the way they do. Join me as we tease out the reasons why cards go up or fail to go up. You’ll get a sense of my thinking process and the questions that I’m asking myself along the way.
I love doing my financial recaps of older sets where I mine the expensive cards, but going back further is a little harder in two ways. First, there are just so few good cards in older sets. Second, the good ones don’t often turn over, so it’s hard to establish prices. Luckily, Mirage Block was the first “modern” block and it brought in some great spells that wizards still sling today. Let’s take a walk through time as we re-acquaint ourselves with the block. Below is a list of some of the choice picks from the block; I left out the cards worth under two dollars, leaving only the prime cards on the list. There are some cards in here that I guarantee will surprise you.
Part of speculation and long-term strategies involves making sure that your cash is doing the most work that it can. When your cards are not performing, you need to fire them and get some more productive cards on the line. This weekend at GP: Indy, I divested from several cards that I had been sitting on. The subtheme of my article is “win, lose or draw,” with a look at how an Eternal player confronts finite cash, broad possibilities and the desire to clean house.
Corbin looks back at trades he made years ago and finds out how those trades look today and what lessons can be learned from them!
In the last segment of his artifact extravaganza, Carlos is looking at Dark Ascension and Kataki, War’s Wage. This guy has typically been considered unplayable for Commander; but when you build around his effect, he can be pretty nasty.
Sakashima impersonates a solid artifact deck in Carlos Gutierrez’s deck in today’s article.
